The Street Sweeper

Martin Luther King Jr. once said:

“If it falls your lot to be a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, sweep streets like Beethoven composed music…

Sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry. Sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will have to pause and say:

Here lived a great street sweeper who swept his job well.”

I love that quote because it shows the importance of small tasks. Street Sweeping is not a highly desired job(and is not very common). You could compare it to a garbage man or a janitor…it’s not something you wanna be when you grow up. But this quote says even though your job seems insignificant, do it to the best of your ability. And that goes for anything … writing papers, taking out trash, cleaning bathrooms, etc.

For all those street sweepers out there (yes, I am one); whatever you do, do it as you would for a king. Do it for the glory of God … so that when people look at the work you put into small jobs, they will see the difference that God makes in even small things.

So remember that whatever small task you have, do it like Michelangelo painted pictures … like Beethoven composed music … like Shakespeare wrote poetry …

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31

The Prancing Locust

I hope the title brought you here. If not, great. If yeah then awesome! Titles are important though in everything…in introducing, presenting and greeting. I mean would you have come here if the title had been “A New Post of the Week” would you of read this? Probably not. But with unique titles people are interested and want to see what it’s all about. It’s cool how God made us that way; to like interesting things. But what might be interesting to one person isn’t always interesting to another…that’s what is so cool about humans! God made us special and different from others. He planned what we would be like from the beginning and what our likes and dislikes would be. He gave us a name and a plan for our lives. It’s quite amazing when you think about it all 🙂 So when it comes to titles they are very important… we are made different from our neighbors, from your best friend, from your sister/brother, from everyone. It would be boring if we were all the same and hard to have relationships if we were all the same… yet God took the time to think about you and what you were gonna be like. What your personality was gonna be like and your laugh and smile and everything that makes you, you! God planned it out waaaay before you were born and gave you your own identity…. a title.

So what you can take away from this is. Don’t feel like you have to fit in. You aren’t made to be like everyone else. Your special and set apart from the crowd. Be yourself. Be who God made you to be!!!

Proverbs 8:22- “The Lord formed me from the beginning,
      before he created anything else.”

Superman

Once a month my beautiful city of Cape Coral has a movie in the park…this month of April the movie was Superman Returns. Now I’m not a faithful superhero watcher cause I don’t really like them.. but I had seen this movie before and didn’t really like it. This time though my whole view on the movie was different. It was like watching a whole different movie!!

The part that got me the most is when Superman flew Lois high up in the sky and said “Listen. What do you hear??” He asked. “Nothing” Lois replied. Then Superman replied, “I hear everything. You wrote that the world doesn’t need a savior, but every day I hear people crying for one.”

As soon as I heard the line I was like WOAH WOAH WOAH!!! DUDE! It was like something really clicked. Something was brought down to my level and it hit me in the head! I sat there at the park under my nice warm blanket thinking “God hear’s everything. People say they don’t need a Savior…but everyday you see people crying out for one!” Yah there are differences, but that line was just like a wow moment for me thinking that, yah God hear’s the people’s cries, but they don’t want a Savior they want a superman..someone who will fly in and save the day when they need to put their faith into the One True God – Jesus Christ.

What do we do with this?? Well as Christians we need to be out there telling everyone that God hears their cries and cares and wants to help… if they would let him… Jesus already took our punishment for sin… you just need to admit that we sinned and believe that Jesus did die and came back to life and then choose him… God hears and listens and answers.

This is a bit of encouragement from the movie…  At the end of the movie Superman talks to his son… and says this, “You will be different, sometimes you’ll feel like an outcast, but you’ll never be alone. You will make my strength your own.”

You will never be alone. As Christians we are different and should not feel like we belong to this world… but you will never be alone in this journey of life that God has given us… for God is always with us… and HE will give you strength to do the impossible…

“Come and listen, all you who fear God,
and I will tell you what he did for me.
For I cried out to him for help,
praising him as I spoke.
If I had not confessed the sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
But God did listen!
He paid attention to my prayer.
Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer
or withdraw his unfailing love from me.”

Psalm 66:16-20

Digging Deep

I hate reading. With a burning passion. Whenever I have to read, it is awful… BUT last night at Borders book store….there was a sale on Shakespeare…a girl can’t help herself around him…he drew me in and then he was in my hand…that night  I left with 5 of his plays. All $2 each!!! I was so excited! Like I was going through the book store and finding all the Shakespeare plays and seeing all the discounts and couldn’t help myself. Now, I hate reading…even reading Shakespeare, but I am able to enjoy him(and other old authors) because of the language used in their writings. It was beautiful and calming…almost…something about old literature is so exciting and challenging. It’s not like the junk people write today where we can read a book and then that be it…you have to research terms and dig deep into what the author was meaning! It’s a lot more enjoyable and rewarding once you finish something like Beowulf or Sir Gawain and the Green Knight! Now do I still hate reading? YES! But when I take the time to sit down and research and understand the authors point it’s so much more enjoyable!

My List so far(of books I need to read):

1.) Utopia- Thomas More

2.) Beggar’s Opera – John Gay

3.) Robinson Crusoe – Daniel Defoe

4.) Much Ado About Nothing – William Shakespeare 🙂

5.) Treasure Island – Robert Louis Stevenson

6.) Sense and Sensibility – Jane Austen (sadly I didn’t get through this one..so I am starting over)

7.) Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea – Jules Verne

8.) The Three Musketeers – Alexandre Dumas Fils

9.) Gulliver’s Travels – Jonathan Swift (I actually need to finish it…it was so interesting…I recommend it)

10.) Vanity Fair – William Makepeace Thackeray

That’s my summer reading list so far! I am working to finishing them all! Through the past year though I have grown to appreciate Literature due to all of my literature courses…3 to be exact. Two British Literature classes and one mixed literature/ composition class 🙂 It’s kinda funny how God puts our dislikes right in front of us and makes us work hard at what we hate. But I’m so grateful that I have been given the opportunity to take all of those classes…

So my encouragement through all of my rambling, is this work hard at the things you don’t necessarily like. You can work hard at the things you like too! But sometimes God puts into places and He gives us chances to do things we don’t always like…but work hard and stick to it..it will be worth it in the end!

Work hard and become a leader;
be lazy and become a slave.
